How the Positive Internal Working Model influences perceptions and actions

Positive internal working model

  1. PIWM-Smell something burning, remember he left a stew simmering
  2. You immediately put down the project and rush to the kitchen
  3. You begin to imagine a boiled over pot, and possibly a dried-out stew, wonder what can be done with a dried stew, consider possible alternatives for food for lunch.
  4. You verbalize the positives of the redirected day which calms the brain.
  5. The calmed brain is free to celebrate one’s ability to fix the problem, adapt the dish, thankful for other experiences that taught how to solve the problem. Attention returns to meeting the cognitive goals of enjoying lunch with a friend and completing the repair you were working on in the garage.
  6. Plans are put in place to both respond to the set back and achieve goals. Body is calm, relaxed, focused, and attentive. Function is improved.
  7. Friend response with verbal recognition of the burnt smell

Alberto’s is open and a good place to talk. I liked their lasagna. I needed something of dinner tonight anyway…You verbalize the positives of the redirected day which calms the brain.
I can probably add some broth an get rid of the stuff on the bottom, it will probably fit nicely into a pie crust for dinner later. Now how do I want to proceed from here???The calmed brain is free to celebrate one’s ability to fix the problem, adapt the dish, thankful for other experiences that taught how to solve the problem. I think I’ll put the stew on hold for now. We’ll go to Alberto’s for lunch they’re nice and private. That allows the next hour to finish the repair.  Plans are put in place to both respond to the set back and achieve goals. Body is calm, relaxed, focused, and attentive. Function is improved.  
Friend arrives and comments on the smell to which I respond with yup and we’re going to Alberto’s.   Friend respond with verbal recognition of the burnt smell but rolls with my solution beginning to look forward to the new plan.  

Neuro pathways (thought patterns) put in place promoting problem solving, self-calming, joy.

Implications for parents raising a child with NIWM

  1. Pay attention to own NIWM, know when each come into play
  2. Internal working models evolve and change from our experiences* and our narration of the experience
  3. Internal working models evolve and change from our intention
    1. Interpretation and narration are front brain activities that impact the development of our IWM.
